Melbourne Stars have been part of the Big Bash League since its inaugural season in 2011–12. Famous players to have pulled on the team's green and black jersey include Shane Warne, Lasith Malinga, and Kevin Pietersen.
Melbourne Stars are one of only 2 Big Bash franchises never to win the tournament. They have, however, finished as runners-up 3 times. In the 2021–22 edition of the BBL, the Stars recorded the tournament's highest-ever team total (273) thanks to a record-breaking 154 not out from captain Maxwell.
