Known as the “friendly games”, the Commonwealth Games is a multi-sport event held every 4 years where all competing athletes are from nations and territories that are members of the Commonwealth of Nations. The next Games will be held in Glasgow in 2026.
📜 Commonwealth Games History
Running for over 90 years, the Commonwealth Games are a treasured part of the international sporting calendar. Whilst the Olympics have always been bigger, the Commonwealth Games offer a different type of sporting spectacle. Internationally, the unique reach of the Games has seen smaller territories compete independently and prominently - and in greater numbers than at the inaugural games in 1930, when only 11 countries competed.
💯 Commonwealth Games Format
The Commonwealth Games occur every 4 years, and function much like other international multi-sport events: athletes compete under their national flags aiming to win gold, silver, or bronze medals, to help their country top the medals table! From Australia to Zimbabwe, all the competing nations and territories are members of the Commonwealth of Nations. As well as featuring classic multi-sport disciplines, the Games also include exciting sports which don’t feature at the Olympiad, such as cricket.
Hosting duties for the Games are decided via an international bidding process, allowing the event to move around the globe quadrennially, and reach as many spectators as possible!
