📜 Blackburn Rovers History
A founding member of the Football League in 1888, Blackburn had themselves been founded back in 1875 by John Lewis and Arthur Constantine.
The club enjoyed a great deal of success in its early years, winning 5 FA Cup titles between 1884 and 1891, with a 6th coming in 1928. This included 3 consecutive wins from 1884-1886, for which Blackburn were awarded a silver shield that had been specially commissioned for the occasion. Rovers also picked up 2 First Division titles in 1912 and 1914.
Blackburn would endure many struggles as the 20th century wore on, however, including a 26-year absence from the top flight between 1966 and 1992.
Their fortunes were transformed by the takeover of the club by Jack Walker, a longtime Rovers fan and local business owner, in 1990. With Walker's funding allowing Rovers to acquire stars such as Alan Shearer, Blackburn not only returned to the top flight but became Premier League title contenders, lifting the trophy in 1995.
The last 2 decades have seen Blackburn return to a period of struggle once again, but they remain one of English football's most storied and decorated clubs.
