📜 Preston North End History
Preston North End Football Club was officially founded in 1880, although PNE had existed as a cricket club since 1963; they began playing football in 1878 and then devoted themselves solely to it 2 years after.
In 1888, they became one of the founding members of the Football League. The following year, they had the honour of becoming the first ever English champions and the first winners of a double, as they also won the FA Cup. In the process, they became known as the Invincibles or the Old Invincibles, as they went the entire campaign unbeaten.
They added a second title in 1890 and finished as runner-up in each of the 3 seasons after that.
They spent much of their history since playing in the top flight and they also added another FA Cup in 1938, but they have not featured in English football's highest tier since they were relegated in 1961.
