Beach volleyball is a variation of volleyball and it is a team sport played by 2 teams usually of 2 players on a sand court divided by a net. In terms of objective, it is very similar to indoor volleyball: teams send the ball over the net and strive to ground it on the opponent's side of the court. Teammates work and combine moves to prevent the opposing team from grounding the ball on their side of the court.
Beach volleyball is thought to have come from Hawaii in 1915, while the modern 2-player format originated in Santa Monica, California. Due to the skill and quick-thinking involved, the sport is hugely popular around the world and established itself as an Olympic sport since the 1996 Summer Olympics. The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) - sometimes working as Volleyball World - is the global governing body for the sport and organises the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships and the Beach Pro Tour.
