Both the Citi Open and the Silicon Valley Classic were until last year independent stalwarts of the ATP 500 and WTA 500 tennis tours respectively. Though played on opposite coasts by players of different genders, the tournaments did share some similarities: the events were founded only 2 years apart, the Citi Open (then the Washington Star International) in 1969, and the Silicon Valley Classic (then the British Motor Cars Invitation) in 1971; both events were also founded by bona fide tennis legends, with Arthur Ashe lending his support to the Citi Open on the proviso that it be held in a racially-integrated part of Washington DC, and Billie Jean King founding the Silicon Valley Classic, which was the first women’s-only professional tennis event in the world.
As of 2023, the 2 tournaments will merge, integrating their ATP 500 and WTA 500 licenses and over 100 years of tennis history into one tournament, the Mubadala Citi DC Open. The inaugural edition of this “new” event will be held at the home of the Citi Open, Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, between 29 July and 6 August. The Mubadala Citi DC Open will be the only joint-ATP 500 and WTA 500 event on the professional tennis tour, and as such is expected to attract an incredibly strong player field in both the men’s and women’s draws. Series Packages, which provide the same reserved Stadium Court seat for all tournament dates, are already available to purchase on request, with prices starting at USD $495 in the Second Tier Reserved sections. Single Session tickets are expected to go on general sale closer to the event.
