The Mubadala Citi DC Open, also traditionally known as the Washington Open, is a combined men's and women's ATP 500 and WTA 500 tennis event, held in Washington D.C.
The event was first held in 1969 as a men's event under the name the Washington Star International, with tennis legend Arthur Ashe an early supporter of the tournament; he successfully persuaded the organisers to hold it in a racially-integrated area of the city, so that people of colour could attend. After a number of name changes and sponsorship deals, the Washington Open was re-branded as the Citi Open in 2012, when it merged with a women's tournament that had previously been held in nearby College Park, becoming a joint-ATP 500 and WTA 250 event.
Prior to the 2023 event, the Citi Open then expanded further: the tournament license for the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, a WTA 500 event hosted in California since 1971, was integrated into the Citi Open's own license, producing the world's only joint-ATP 500 and WTA 500 event, and a tournament boasting a combined tennis history of more than 100 years. This "new" event was branded the Mubadala Citi DC Open, and was first staged in 2023. The event is hosted at the Washington Open's historic home, Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, situated less than a 30-minute drive from some of the United States' most iconic landmarks, including the Capitol building, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument.
