The World Athletics Federation (formerly IAAF, International Association of Athletics Federations) organises the World Athletics Championships, formerly known as the World Championships in Athletics, every 2 years. They serve as the premier senior international outdoor sports championships for track and field athletics worldwide, including marathon running and race walking, in addition to the Olympic Games. The inaugural Championships were held in 1976 and 2023 will be the 19th edition.
Although the Championships are usually biennial, the knock-on effect of the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic meant the 2021 edition of the Worlds was held earlier this year in 2022. Eugene, Oregon in the United States excellent hosting skills were never in doubt due to Hayward Field’s regular spot on the annual Diamond League roster. There were 3 world records broken at the 2022 Championships including one from Swedish pole vault sensation Armand "Mondo" Duplantis.
