As the sole Canadian stop on the LPGA Tour, the CP Women’s Open – also known as the l’Omnium Féminin CP by French-speaking Canadians – has been sorely missed after regrettably being forced to cancel in 2020 and 2021. From 22 – 28 August 2022, it shall return at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, the 4th time this venue has hosted the event since its inauguration in 1973.
The CP Women’s Open isn’t just notable for being the LPGA Tour’s only foray north of the border; it was 1 of the LPGA Tour’s 4 major championships from 1979 to 2000. Although it was subsequently replaced as a major by the Women’s British Open, it remains a prestigious event to win.
Lydia Ko made LPGA Tour history in this competition back in 2012. The Kiwi – then an amateur – was just 15 years and 4 months old when she stunned the golfing world by winning it, becoming the youngest winner the LPGA has ever seen. She broke the 16-year, 7-month record set by Lexi Thompson a year earlier at the Navistar LPGA Classic. Ko has won twice more at the CP Women’s Open, and when she won there for the second time in 2013, she was still younger than Thompson was at the time of her maiden victory.
The defending champion is Jin Young Ko, who won the 2019 edition by 5 strokes after setting a tournament-record score of 26-under. Ko was named LPGA Player of the Year that season having won 3 further titles, 2 of which were majors, and she earned that moniker again in 2021. The partisan crowds will be rooting for one of their own, however; Brooke Henderson. The 24-year-old won her home tournament in 2018, becoming the first Canadian winner of the event since Jocelyne Bourassa won the inaugural competition back in 1973.
