With just 9 games left until the end of the La Liga season, it is perhaps a stretch to say things are hotting up at the top with Barcelona sitting 11 points clear of their biggest rivals Real Madrid in second, however, Real’s other huge rival, Atlético will be hoping to leapfrog them. With a strong run of form with 6 wins in their last 6 games, Atléti go into Sunday’s game against Barca at Camp Nou (KO 16:15) with a certain amount of confidence.
Despite this, their head-to-head record is heavily in Barcelona’s favour with the Catalan side winning 11 out of 20 (and drawing 7) La Liga matchups. At Camp Nou, interestingly, Barcelona have drawn as many games against Atlético as they have won. Sunday’s game is sure to be entertaining and divisive.
If Barcelona take the win at the weekend, they could be one step closer to beating the current record margin title win of 15 points and will certainly be a step closer to lifting the trophy. If Atlético Madrid take 3 points on Sunday, they could leapfrog Real Madrid if Real lose their game against Celta Vigo on Saturday.
Both teams feature a sprinkling of star players. Antoine Griezmann and Álvaro Morata make Atlético the only team to have 2 different players reaching 10 goals in this La Liga season, and Griezmann has scored 5 goals in his last 8 league games. Griezmann, of course, played for Barcelona between 2019 and 2022. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski will look to turn around a recent goal drought.
Sunday is St. Jordi’s Day (St. George’s Day) and Catalonia is sure to combine this festival of culture and legend with the fiesta of football. Tickets from official and secondary sellers can be found here!
