Wigan Athletic are a professional football club based in Wigan in Greater Manchester, England. Known as the Latics, they play their home games at the DW Stadium.
📜 Wigan Athletic History
The club was founded in 1932 as the town's 6th attempt at establishing a football club; previous outfits Wigan AFC, Wigan County, Wigan United, Wigan Town, and Wigan Borough had all gone under.
The Latics wasted little time in making an impression in the FA Cup; they entered the competition for the first time in the 1934-35 season and set a record in the process as they defeated Carlisle United 6-1, the largest margin of victory for a non-League side over League opposition.
It would take them until 1978 to join the Football League, and they picked up Football League Trophies in 1985 and 1999.
In 2005, they reached the top flight for the first time. The team spent 8 years in the Premier League, in which time they reached the League Cup final in 2006 and – the same season in which they were relegated – famously lifting the FA Cup in 2013 with a 1-0 upset of Manchester City.
