The Washington Commanders are a professional American football team based in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Formerly known as the Washington Redskins, the team competes in the NFL's NFC East division, and plays their home games at Northwest Stadium.
Washington Commanders History
Founded in 1932, the team now known as the Commanders was originally based in Boston before relocating to Washington, D.C. in 1937. Under the name "Redskins", the franchise achieved significant success, winning 3 Super Bowls in the 1980s and early 1990s.
After the turn of the Millennium, the Commanders aimed to recreate former glories on the field, while, off the field, it tackled issues surrounding its nickname. The "Redskins" name was dropped in 2020 to promote inclusivity and respect, and the side briefly became the Washington Football Team, before adopting the "Commanders" nickname in 2022. With a new name and a core of young talent, the Commanders are now embarking on a new chapter in their storied legacy.
