British immigrants are widely credited with introducing rugby union to the United States of America in the 19th century, with the sport particularly catching-on in university towns and in the cities of New York, San Francisco, and St. Louis. The USA achieved Olympic success in the early 20th century, but the sport soon found itself living in the shadow of American football.
In the latter half of the 20th century, "the Eagles" underwent a revival, and governing bodies were established to promote the sport on a national level. The national side has since qualified for all but one Rugby World Cup, though they have never progressed further than the pool stage.
