Ed Smith Stadium is a baseball stadium in Sarasota, Florida. The venue is home to the Baltimore Orioles during MLB Spring Training.
📜 History
Built in 1989, Ed Smith Stadium was always designed to host MLB spring training activities. Initially, it served as the spring training venue for the Chicago White Sox until 1997, followed by the Cincinnati Reds until 2008.
At this point in its lifespan, 20 years on from construction, Ed Smith Stadium was functional, but relatively basic and lacked modern amenities that were becoming standard in other spring training ballparks. However, this soon changed when, in 2010, the Baltimore Orioles agreed to move their spring training operations to the stadium, triggering a $31 million overhaul of the venue.
Thanks to the multi-million-dollar funding package, rejuvenation efforts at Ed Smith Stadium included new seats, a renovated concourse, upgraded suites and concessions, and the addition of a modern scoreboard. Much of the work was designed to help the venue feel more like Camden Yards – the Orioles' regular-season home stadium.
Since its renovation, Ed Smith Stadium has received acclaim for its fan-friendly atmosphere and classic ballpark charm, solidifying its status as a premier spring training destination in Florida. Today, it continues to serve the Baltimore Orioles and the local community, hosting various events throughout the year, including baseball tournaments, concerts, and festivals.
