Visiting Birmingham
Having risen from the ground up in the late 19th-century after emerging at the forefront of iron and steel production, Birmingham has become a historically industrial city. It is named after Birmingham, England, which led the iron and steel industry in Britain’s own industrial revolution. Although Birmingham is now an enigmatic city with sky-rise buildings and a global outlook, its industrial buildings like the Sloss Furnaces and Dr Pepper factory have been preserved. In the 20th century, Birmingham became the centre of another defining era — the Civil Rights Movement. The heroic and heartbreaking stories of Birmingham’s black community are not only told in the dedicated Civil Rights Institute, but also in the streets of the very district in which pivotal events took place.
