McDiarmid Park

McDiarmid Park is a football stadium located in Perth, Scotland, and it is the home ground of St Johnstone FC.

📜 History

The stadium opened in 1989, replacing Muirton Park as St Johnstone's home. Their former ground had become dilapidated in recent years, and in 1986 St Johnstone were made a proposal by the supermarket chain Asda, who wished to purchase the land to build a new supermarket on the site and relocate the club to a brand new stadium on the western side of Perth, at no cost to the club.

The land for the new stadium was donated by local farmer Bruce McDiarmid, whom the venue is named after. McDiarmid considered the donation – the land was worth approximately £400,000 at the time – a gift to the local people. At St Johnstone's insistence, he was named as the club's honorary president and accepted a 20% shareholding.

McDiarmid Park has also been used for rugby at times over the years, including Caledonia Reds prior to their merger with the Glasgow Warriors, and the Scotland national rugby union team.
