Istanbul’s first-time visitors will make the most of their stay in Sultanahmet. As the original centre of the former Constantinople, many of the city’s most formidable landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque will be right on your doorstep.
Today, Taksim Square is considered the heart of the city because it is Istanbul’s prime shopping destination. Big spenders will find everything here from popular commercial high-street stores to traditional independent Turkish retailers selling everything from jewellery to spices.
Those who love shopping but prefer something slightly cooler and more alternative than the commercial Taksim Square will surely prefer Beyoglu. However, not only is it an excellent indie shopping destination, it is also a hub of modern culture. Find theatres, galleries, boutiques and more on Beyoglu’s İstiklal Avenue.
Beyoglu is also one of a number of top nightlife destinations across the city. Another favourite includes Karakoy, another alternative neighbourhood on Istanbul’s European side also known for its chic cafes and boutiques. For a really wild night out though, look no further than Galata aka nightclub central.
For a more refined Istanbul experience, consider staying in Sisli or Nisantasi, which are considered the most bouji areas in the city. Spend your days mingling amongst Istanbul’s elite and spend your nights in upscale boutique hotels.
Families will feel most at home in Besiktas, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the European side of Istanbul. Also exuding an upscale energy, the neighbourhood provides the perfect blend of commercial and residential aspects. The equally uscale Kadikoy is the ideal place for families to stay on the Asian side of Istanbul.
Budget travellers who don’t want to compromise on location will be most comfortable in Eminou and Sirkeci, two of the cheapest areas to stay in central Istanbul. Despite being super affordable, these neighbourhoods are still within arms reach of many of the city’s biggest attractions including the epic Grand Bazaar.
From ferries and sea buses to metro stations and taxis, there’s many ways to get around Istanbul quickly, cheaply, and easily.
