📜 Sydney Swans History
The club was founded in 1873 as the South Melbourne Football Club, and, after finding success in its early years, was one of the clubs which broke away from the Victorian Football Association (VFA) to form the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 1897. The VFL would act as an antecedent organisation to the modern-day AFL, meaning that the Sydney Swans is one of the oldest clubs in the competition.
The Swans won VFL premierships in 1909 and 1918, and then appeared in 4 consecutive grand finals between 1933 and 1936, winning in 1933. This period of success coincided with the birth of the "Swans" moniker; a contingent of Western Australians in the South Melbourne squad contributed to the nickname, due to the bird's association with the state of Western Australia.
In the post-war period, however, South Melbourne struggled to reassert itself on the VFL. The club could muster only 2 finals appearances in 36 years, and became financially insecure. These factors, combined with a growing desire within the VFL for a team to be founded in Sydney, led to South Melbourne's relocation to New South Wales in 1982.
The "new" club initially struggled to amass fans and funding; by the mid-1980's its fortunes had somewhat turned around, but the team struggled once more towards the end of the decade. The Swans finished bottom of the AFL table in 1992, 1993, and 1994, but in 1996 the club remarkably made it to the grand final. Though the Swans lost to North Melbourne, it was its first grand final appearance in over 50 years.
The Swans would reach the grand final again in 2005, and would beat the West Coast Eagles to claim the club's first premiership since 1993. Another grand final match against the Eagles followed in 2006, with the Swans losing out to the team they had beaten the previous year. The club then won its fifth premiership in 2012, and would go on to reach the grand final again in 2014, 2016, and 2022.
