The Sydney Kings are a professional basketball team based in Sydney, Australia. Competing in the National Basketball League (NBL), their home venue is the Qudos Bank Arena.
📜 Sydney Kings History
The Sydney Kings were founded in 1987, the result of a merger between the Sydney Supersonics and the Sydney Westars. Their colours, purple and gold, were chosen in homage to the iconic Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA.
The team – among the richest in the NBL – were initially known for perpetually underachieving during their early years, but that reputation was put to bed when they became the first team in the division's history to rack up 3 consecutive championships between 2003 and 2005.
In 2006, the team was bought by fuel technology company Firepower International; when the company collapsed 2 years later it left the Kings unable to pay their players and the team folded in 2008, but they were brought back under new ownership in 2010.
Although it took time for them to return to winning ways, back-to-back championship victories for the Kings in 2022 and 2023 have further cemented their legacy among the NBL's most successful teams.
