📜 Stoke City History
The Potters originated in 1863 as the Stoke Ramblers, although their first recorded match was not until 5 years later. In 1878, they became known simply as Stoke FC after a merger with Stoke Victoria Athletic Club. They did not adopt their current moniker until 1925 after Stoke-on-Trent was granted city status.
The 1930s saw the rise of Stanley Matthews, Stoke's most beloved legend. The forward spent 15 years at the club before moving to Blackpool and would later return in 1961 – aged 46 – for another 4-year stint with the Potters.
The club lifted their most significant honour, the League Cup, in 1972.
