Pretoria Sports Events
Rugby dominates the sports scene in Pretoria. The Loftus Versfeld Stadum has hosted many international matches including the 1995 Rugby World Cup. It was also one of South Africa’s cities chosen to host games for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Visiting Pretoria
Pretoria, also known as Tshwane, was founded by a Dutchman in 1855 and named after his father, a hero of the Boer War. Later, it became the capital of the South African Republic and, to this day, the city serves as one of three capitals in South Africa. Pretoria has a highly regarded academic reputation, bringing a distinct student vibe to the local bars and cafes.
Pretoria bridges the River Apies and touches the foothills of the Magaliesberg Mountains. The city has undergone many varied influences over the years and, nestled in amongst many jacaranda trees for which the city is renowned, you will find Dutch, British, and German colonial architecture alongside modern and art deco structures, giving this city a unique atmosphere. In October, the city blossoms in glorious purple as the jacaranda flowers bloom.
