The Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s golf tournament, contested between Europe and the United States. The inaugural Ryder Cup was held at the Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1927. While in its early years the Ryder Cup was contested between Great Britain and Ireland and the United States, in 1979 a decision was made to include continental Europe in the competition. After a long-running American dominance in the early years, since 1979, Europe has gained the upper hand in the head-to-head.
The Ryder Cup’s current match play format involves 2 teams of 12. The competition takes place from a Friday to a Sunday with a total of 28 matches, each played over 18 holes. The winner of each match scores 1 point for their team, with half a point awarded to each team for a tie. The team with the highest number of total points on Sunday claims the Ryder Cup trophy and bragging rights for the next 2 years.
The Ryder Cup is one of golf's most prestigious competitions, and being a team event the rivalry, drama, and passion on show is unrivalled in the sport, pulling in both seasoned fans and those new to the game.
In 2025, the United States will be battling to avenge their 16.5-11.5 defeat to Europe when the Ryder Cup heads to the iconic Bethpage Black course for the first time.
