📜 Oxford United History
The club were founded as Headington FC in 1893 by a local vicar, Reverend John Scott-Tucker, and Dr Robert Hitchings. They became Headington United in 1911 after merging with local rivals Headington Quarry.
Headington turned professional in 1949, and the following year they became the first professional football club in Britain to install floodlights at their home ground.
In 1960, they adopted the Oxford United name in a bid to raise the club's profile, and 2 years later the reached the Football League for the first time after being elected to the Fourth Division.
The U's spent their first-ever campaign in the top flight in 1985-86, and that same season they won their first major honour by lifting the League Cup after beating Queens Park Rangers 3-0 in the final.
Oxford are still waiting to emulate that level of success again and even spent 4 years back out of the EFL between 2006 and 2010, although they did reach back-to-back EFL Trophy finals in 2016 and 2017.
