Northern Stars play in the ANZ Premiership, the highest level of competitive netball in New Zealand. The Stars are based in Auckland.
The team was founded in 2016 to complete the lineup of teams in the brand new ANZ Premiership. After the disbanding of the ANZ Championship, a trans-Tasman competition that included teams from both New Zealand and Australia, the 2 countries each formed their own, separate national leagues. The Stars were formed as the sixth team in the ANZ Premiership, which already included the 5 teams from New Zealand that had competed in the ANZ Championship.
Since the first season of the ANZ Premiership in 2017, the Stars have not won a minor premiership or an ANZ title. Their best result came in 2019, when they finished the season in third place and won the elimination final against Southern Steel. They went on to face Central Pulse in the Grand Final, where they lost 52-48.
The team plays most of their home games at the Pulman Arena.
