Although Hamilton isn’t one of New Zealand’s biggest or most-visited cities, it is one of the most expensive, beating Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington in world rankings. Most hotels are located in Hamilton Central, the city’s CBD which overlooks the Waikato River. This is where you’ll find the majority of the city’s shops, businesses, restaurants, and bars, making it ideal for those who want to shop, dine, and party.

Frankton is a lively neighbourhood located just a few moments from the CBD with its own trendy shopping area. The city’s train station is also located in this area for those who prioritise convenient transportation.

If you’re looking for a quieter suburban place to stay, head across the Waikato River to Hamilton East, a family-oriented area near the serene Hamilton Gardens, or Pukete, a leafy residential suburb.

The University of Waikato sits at the edge of Hamilton East in Hillcrest which, thanks to its large student population, has a number of trendy cafes, shops, and bars frequented by students and young professionals.

Although Hamilton is a surprisingly easy city to walk around, there is a local bus service that connects each neighbourhood to the CBD quickly and easily.
