New York Liberty, also known simply as the Liberty, are a professional women's basketball team based in New York. They play in the Eastern Conference of the Women's National Basketball Association and they share their home venue, the Barclays Center, with their NBA counterparts, the Brooklyn Nets.
New York Liberty History
The Liberty were founded in 1997. They were among the 8 original founding members of the WNBA, and they defeated the Los Angeles Sparks in the league's inaugural game on 21 June that year.
New York reached the WNBA Finals in 4 of their first 6 seasons, but they fell short on each occasion, losing 3 times to the Houston Comets and lastly to the Sparks in 2002.
The Liberty ended a 21-year wait to return to the Finals in 2023, only to lose once again as they were defeated by the Las Vegas Aces. They did, however, lift the WNBA Commissioner's Cup in 2023, beating the Aces to the trophy.
In 2024, they finally brought their championship drought to an end as they beat the Minnesota Lynx in 5 games to win their inaugural title.
