Visiting Tilburg
Tiny Tilburg, a university city, sits on the border of Belgium in southern Holland. Despite its small size, Tilburg once had one of the biggest wool production industries in the world. In the late 1800s, there were as many as 145 textile mills spread throughout the city. Although only a handful remains today, the textiles industry still has a large role in Tilburg’s heritage. Now, some of its main draws are its typical Dutch charm, sought-after student scene, and of course, Europe’s biggest and best funfair. For 10 days in July each year, hundreds of thousands of people gather in Tilburg to play on its game stalls, ride its helter-skelter, eat candy floss, and join one of Holland’s best LGBTQ+ celebrations.
