Netball Super League is the top level of netball in the United Kingdom. Featuring teams based around England, Scotland, and Wales, the league is known as one of the strongest domestic netball competitions in the world.
📜 History of Netball Super League
The original Netball Super League was founded in 2005 and included 8 teams: Brunel Hurricanes (now Surrey Storm), Celtic Dragons (now Cardiff Dragons), Galleria Mavericks (now Saracens Mavericks), Leeds Carnegie, Loughborough Lightning, Northern Thunder (now Manchester Thunder), Team Bath, and Team Northumbria.
Team Bath dominated the early years of the Super League, winning the inaugural title and 4 of the first 8 seasons. Between 2016-2022, some franchises both left and joined the league, making the total number of teams 10.
The 2025 season had significant changes as the league aimed to establish a more professional footing. Team Bath, Strathclyde Sirens, Surrey Storm and Severn Stars departed the league. Birmingham Panthers and Nottingham Forest have joined the league.
💯 Netball Super League Format & Scoring
The teams play each other in regular season matches to earn points on the overall league table.
A Netball Super League match features 2 teams of 7 players (Goal Shooter, Goal Attack, Wing Attack, Centre, Wing Defence, Goal Defence, and Goal Keeper). The match is divided into 4 quarters, each lasting 15 minutes. After the first and third quarters, players are given a short break, with a longer interval at half-time.
Teams earn points by successfully throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal ring. Goals can only be scored in regular play by the Goal Shooter or Goal Attack positions. Each goal is worth 1 point, and the team who finishes the match with the most points is the winner. If a team commits a technical foul, the other team is awarded a free throw, which is also worth 1 point if successfully converted.
The winner of each Netball Super League match earns 3 points in the league table.
