1. Fußball- und Sportverein Mainz 05 e.V. - often shortened to 1. FSV Mainz 05 and more commonly known as Mainz 05 or simply Mainz - is a German professional football club based in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate and currently playing in the country's top tier Bundesliga. The club plays home games at MEWA Arena.
Founded in 1905 as the name suggests, the club was originally known as 1. Mainzer Fussballclub Hassia 1905 before the club merged with FC Hermannia 07 to create 1. Mainzer Fussballverein Hassia 05 and then another merger happened in 1919 with Sportverein 1908 Mainz to create 1. Mainzer Fußball- und Sportverein 05. During World War II, the club was forced into a further merger with Reichsbahn SV Mainz (to create Reichsbahn SV Mainz 05) which lasted until the end of the war. Since then, Mainz has had a steady rise up the league system and in 2003/04 the club reached the Bundesliga under then-coach Jürgen Klopp. Aside from dropping to the second tier for the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons, the club has consistently played in the Bundesliga since then.
