Stade Rochelais, also known as La Rochelle, is a rugby union club from the French city of La Rochelle. The team competes in the top-flight of French rugby, the Top 14. The club's home colours are yellow and black; the team's home ground is Stade Marcel-Deflandre.
Whilst La Rochelle was formally established as a bona fide sports club in 1898, the team was in fact founded 2 years earlier. Rugby became a principal part of the club's structure from 1902 onwards.
The club won regional and domestic titles and trophies throughout the 20th century, but it was not until the 21st century that the team from the west of France became a heavyweight of European rugby union. In 2012 La Rochelle gained promotion to the top-flight for the second time in 3 seasons, and its fortunes continued to rise, with strong financial backing and the coaching of Irish great Ronan O'Gara both contributing to the club's success in recent years.
In 2019 the club reached the final of the Challenge Cup, losing to Clermont in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, and then in 2021 won the Top 14 title for the first time. The 2020/21 season also saw the team reach its first Champions Cup final, which it lost to Toulouse, however La Rochelle succeeded at the second attempt, defeating Leinster in the final of the 2021/22 Champions Cup to win the trophy for the first time. In the 2022/23 season La Rochelle recorded an incredible double, winning both the Top 14 and Champions Cup.
