When you think of horse racing in the United States, you instantly picture the Kentucky Derby run on the famous dirt track of Churchill Downs, surrounded by cheering fans in fantastic hats, sipping on mint juleps. In the USA, the race for 3-year-old thoroughbreds is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”.
The week leading up to the Derby is known as Derby Week which includes: evening racing on Opening Night; the thoroughbreds training at Dawn at the Downs sessions; racing on Tuesday's Champions Day, Wednesday, and Thurby (an abbreviation for Derby Thursday); the Oaks (the premier race for 3-year-old female horses); and concludes with the big race itself. On top of thrilling racing, the Derby Festival offers 2 weeks of off-track entertainment around the big race.
