Japan's "Cherry Blossom Fifteen" made their test debut at the 1991 Women's Rugby World Cup, losing 62-0 to France. It took until the next World Cup, in 1994, for them to pick up their first win, when they defeated Sweden 10-5. The Japanese women's rugby union team also qualified for the 2022 and 2017 tournaments, but they did not win a pool stage match at either event.
Away from the World Cup, the Cherry Blossom Fifteen have also won a number of Asia Rugby Women's Championships.
