Thomond Park is a multi-purpose stadium in Limerick, Ireland, primarily used to host rugby union matches. It is one of the home stadiums of United Rugby Championship (URC) side Munster.
📜 History
Thomond Park opened in 1934, and was named after the former Kingdom of Thomond, which included parts of modern-day County Limerick. Originally, Thomond Park included 2 rugby pitches. Early tenants included Shannon Rugby Football Club and UL Bohemian Rugby Football Club; both rugby union teams still use the ground as a base today, alongside fellow long-term tenants Munster Rugby.
In 1978, Munster became the first Irish team to beat New Zealand, when the province defeated the touring All Blacks 12-0 at Thomond Park. The official capacity of the stadium at that time was approximately 13,000, although the match day attendance during that historic victory is disputed.
Starting in 1998, Thomond Park underwent a major redevelopment as part of rugby union's increasing professionalisation. Stands, stadium facilities, the pitch, and other amenities were added or modernised, and the ground's capacity was increased to over 25,000. The venue underwent a further expansion throughout 2007 and 2008. The first match following the latter redevelopment saw Munster host the All Blacks once again.
Despite the structural changes Thomond Park has undergone, it has consistently remained a revered rugby union venue, famed for the intimidating atmospheres Munster fans produce there on big match days. Munster did not lose a Champions Cup match ground between 1995 (the year the competition was founded) and January 2007.
As well as hosting club and provincial fixtures, Thomond Park has also hosted full Irish test matches (in both rugby union and league), Rugby World Cup games, and Republic of Ireland association football (soccer) fixtures. Musical acts including Bruce Springsteen, The Cranberries, Elton John, and Pink have also performed at the venue.
