St Matthäus, also known as St. Matthäuskirche or Matthäuskirche München, is a prominent Protestant church in central Munich, Germany. Located at Nußbaumstraße 1 in the Ludwigsvorstadt area, it serves as an important parish church of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Bavaria.
The church is primarily used for worship services, baptisms, and weddings, alongside a rich programme of sacred music, including organ recitals and choir performances. It also hosts community gatherings and cultural events with a religious or reflective character.
The first St Matthäus church on this site was built in the 19th century as Munich’s main Protestant church, reflecting the growing Protestant community in a largely Catholic city. The original neo-Gothic building was heavily damaged during the Second World War. In the post-war period it was rebuilt in a more modern architectural style, with the current structure completed and reconsecrated in the mid-20th century. Today St Matthäus remains a key centre of Protestant life and church music in Munich.
