France's national team first took to the pitch in 1904, just 3 weeks before the foundation of football's governing body, FIFA. Les Bleus' first taste of international glory came at the 1984 UEFA European Championship, which came in between consecutive semi-final appearances at the FIFA World Cup. Another period of success came at the turn of the century, with France lifting the World Cup for the first time in 1998 before winning Euro 2000. Zinedine Zidane's infamous headbutt of Marco Materazzi cost France in the final of the 2006 World Cup against Italy, but they regained the title in 2018 as they triumphed over Croatia in the final.
