📜 Florida Atlantic Owls Football History
FAU first fielded a football team in 2001, beginning as an independent school. The new program was led and developed by Howard Schnellenberger, who had made his name as a head coach by taking the Miami Hurricanes to a national championship.
In 2005, the Owls joined the Sun Belt Conference, where they played for 7 years. FAU won 1 conference championship in this period, sharing the honour with Troy in 2007. In the same year, the Owls won the New Orleans Bowl just 7 years into the football program's existence, becoming the fastest NCAA start-up program to win a bowl game.
