The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. The Lions compete in the NFL's NFC North division, and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit.
Detroit Lions History
Founded in Portsmouth, Ohio as the Portsmouth Spartans, the Lions moved to Detroit in 1934 and adopted their current name to complement the city's baseball team, the Tigers.
Despite possessing some of the NFL's most iconic players over the years, including Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, the team has often found consistent success elusive and is one of 4 teams never to have appeared in the Super Bowl. However, the Lions have appeared in 2 NFC Championship games, including one as recently as 2024.
The Detroit Lions are famously part of a cherished NFL tradition: the Thanksgiving Day game – a staple since 1934. The team's resilience and commitment to renewal have also earned them a devoted following, both locally and nationally, and it surely won't be long until the Motor City welcomes its first Lombardi Trophy.
