The Cheltenham Festival is a thrilling 4-day meeting in the UK jump racing calendar. Held annually in March at Cheltenham Racecourse, the event showcases the finest runners and riders and offers the second-largest prize money in the UK calendar after Aintree’s Grand National.
The meeting originated in 1860 – taking on the title "Festival" by 1907 – and, for many years, was used as a preparation race for the Grand National. In more recent times, Cheltenham has established itself as its own standout event and, in 2005, the 3-day meeting was extended to 4 days. Spectators get to see several Grade 1 races including the Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, and Queen Mother Champion Chase, as well as experience the "Cheltenham roar" from the cheering crowds. Adding to the party atmosphere, the meeting usually coincides with St. Patrick’s Day and is very popular with Irish racegoers.
