Rugby first reached Canada in the mid-19th century, when foreign sailors and merchants brought the game ashore. The first official teams to be assembled in the country were based at universities, particularly within the province of Quebec. Gradually, the game became more formalised, and, although it had to compete for attention with American and Canadian football, rugby's prominence increased. By the 20th century, Canadian national teams were touring the United Kingdom, South Africa, and New Zealand.
With increased recognition came increased quality, and Canada's rugby union team was rewarded with a place in the first-ever Rugby World Cup, in 1987. "The Canucks" have appeared at every World Cup since, though they have not qualified for the 2023 tournament. Their best showing came in 1991, when they reached the quarterfinal stage.
