The British & Irish Lions are possibly the most famous touring test side in rugby union. Comprised of players from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, the Lions are, on their day, considered the crème de la crème of Northern Hemisphere rugby. A new Lions squad is assembled every 4 years, drawing on the very best players from the 4 "Home Nations" teams. This side then tours one of the 3 Southern Hemisphere giants - Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa - and plays matches against a combination of provincial or club teams, as well as a trio of test matches against the native national side.
The first British & Irish Lions team was assembled in 1888; the inaugural tour took place throughout Australia and New Zealand, and lasted the best part of a year! Nowadays, Lions tours are closer to a month in length, but the respect, rivalries, and revelry which typified that first tour still remain!
