Bolton Wanderers are a professional football club based in Greater Manchester, England. Nicknamed the Trotters, their home ground is the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
📜 Bolton Wanderers History
The club was founded in 1874 as Christ Church FC by local priest Reverend Joseph Farrall Wright and schoolmaster Thomas Ogden. After a dispute with the vicar, the club departed the church 3 years later and became known as Bolton Wanderers, with their name an homage to their early struggles to find a permanent home.
In 1888, the Trotters became 1 of the 12 founding members of the Football League, half of which were based in Lancashire.
A pair of FA Cup finals followed in 1894 and 1904. While Bolton were unsuccessful on both occasions, they managed to lift the trophy 3 times in the 1920s and again in 1958.
The decades that followed that victory were a fallow period for the club, but a return to the top flight in 1995 sparked a successful era that – while devoid of silverware – saw them earn their place in the UEFA Cup (now the UEFA Europa League) for the first time.
