The Stockholm Open, known for sponsorship reasons as the BNP Paribas Nordic Open, is the oldest indoor ATP event in the world, but its 50-plus years of pedigree very nearly weren't realised; at the inaugural event in 1969, tournament organisers neglected to announce the start date to some of the competition’s biggest stars! The 1969 Open ended on a high however, as tournament winner Nikola Pilić graciously bought all his fellow competitors a round of drinks on the final night – the joke goes that he left Sweden with much less prize money than he’d anticipated!
You can still feel that camaraderie, joy, and enthusiasm at the BNP Paribas Nordic Open today, in part because it is still held at its first venue, the Kungliga Tennishallen, and also because it still provides a warm, friendly week of tennis, with a stellar cast of players included. This historic tournament has been won by greats such as Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe, Björn Borg, and Roger Federer.
