The Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC), also known as the MyState Bank Arena for sponsorship reasons, is an indoor sports and entertainment arena, the largest such venue in Tasmania, Australia. It is the home of the Tasmanian JackJumpers NBL team.
📜 History
The venue opened in 1989 having been constructed as an Australian Bicentennial project; 1988 marked the 200th anniversary of the first fleet of British convict ships arriving in Sydney.
It was the culmination of a desire by the city of Hobart to establish an indoor venue that could hold a variety of events including sports and entertainment, conventions, and exhibitions. This was in part fuelled by local Tasmanian success in basketball; Launceston Casino City won the NBL championship in 1981, and the Hobart Devils had also done relatively well since they began playing in 1983.
The Devils took up residence at the venue until they became defunct in 1996; during their tenure it was often referred to as the "Devils' Den."
The DEC has hosted a number of notable concerts over the years, including the Foo Fighters, Elton, John, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
In 2021, it resumed hosting NBL games after the founding of the JackJumpers.
