The most cherished contest on the cricket calendar is happening in December across 5 of Australia's most iconic cricket pitches. The Ashes returns for its 72nd edition in 2021, with reigning champions Australia battling it out against England in 5 tremendous test matches.
Up to bat first will be Brisbane's Gabba stadium, where Test 1 will get underway on 8-12 December, followed shortly by Test 2, which will be held at the Adelaide Oval on 16-20 December. Next, the action will continue at Melbourne Cricket Ground for Test 3 on 26-30 December, before heading to Sydney Cricket Ground for Test 4 on 5-9 January. Finally, the Test Series will reach its climactic ending at Test 5 at the Optus Stadium on 14-18 January 2022. Each test will consist of 5 days of matches, allowing attendees to purchase tickets from any of the dates listed above.
Tickets are already on sale for all test matches, with prices starting at AUD $30 for adults and AUD $10 for kids at the Gabba stadium. Fans can also purchase combined hotel and match ticket packages, ranging from budget to deluxe so you’re sure to find something to suit your price point.
The return of The Ashes will mark yet another chapter in the deep-seated rivalry between England and Australia. The history between these cricketing giants stretches back to the late 19th century, where the first edition of The Ashes took place on English soil in 1882.
As Australia begin their quest to maintain their grip on the precious urn retained in the thrilling 2019 series in the UK, England will attempt to snatch the terracotta trophy from the Aussies' firm grasp.
Despite the ongoing pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding the numbers this summer, officials at Australian Cricket are optimistic about attendance levels, with tickets being sold at full venue capacity at almost all grounds.
It is fantastic news for Australian cricket fans who have long awaited the return of the biggest Test series in international cricket. However, due to the ongoing ban on international flights, it may be that the usual crowd of Barmy Army followers will be unable to make the journey to support Team England this December.
Nick Hockley, the CEO of Cricket Australia, said in a recent report, "In a perfect world, we would welcome the Barmy Army back to these shores for a summer of singing and sportsmanship with our Australian fans,
"Of course, we will be guided by the Australian Government on all things related to international travel and will advise our friends in England on our position closer to the time."
Whilst it would be a shame for England fans to miss this year's competition, we wish both teams the best of luck and can't wait for the action to unfold!
