The Waste Management Phoenix Open is nothing short of a phenomenon in modern golf. It does not carry the prestige of the majors, nor does it boast the lucrative prize money of the Players Championship, nor does it unite fans in an inter-continental rivalry like the Ryder Cup. However, hundreds of thousands of fans flock to Arizona each year to be part of this staple event on the PGA Tour.
Indeed, in excess of 700,000 spectators attend over the course of the week, sometimes with more than 200,000 passing through the gates on a single day. No other tournament – not The Open, The Masters, or even the Ryder Cup – can rival it in this regard, and therein lies what makes the Phoenix Open such a special event on the annual golfing calendar.
Held at TPC Scottsdale’s appropriately named Stadium Course, the event is rife with grandstands, premium viewing terraces, and more. The short par-3 16th hole, nicknamed “The Coliseum,” is particularly iconic, surrounded by a 20,000-seat grandstand. Here, you’ll find a raucous party atmosphere unlike almost any other golf tournament, while each night the Coors Light Birds Nest tent becomes one of the hottest nightclubs in the country. The tournament was first held in 1932 as the Arizona Open, so it’s among the oldest events on the PGA Tour. It was held 5 times in its first 11 years, but since 1944 it has been a permanent fixture on the calendar. It has been won by some of golf’s greatest players, from Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer through to Phil Mickelson. Interestingly, it remains one of the few events Tiger Woods is yet to win, although his hole-in-one on the 16th – and the crowd’s wild reaction – is still fondly remembered. The defending champion in 2023 will be Scottie Scheffler, who overcame Patrick Cantlay in a tense playoff in this year’s event.
