It’s still early days for the Chevron Championship as it settles into its new home outside Houston, Texas. The tournament was held at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, for 50 years from its inception in 1972 until 2022, during which time a number of traditions emerged.
Most notably, Amy Alcott’s celebratory leap into the water surrounding Mission Hills’ 18th green – known as Poppie’s Pond – after her victory in 1988 sparked one of the most iconic trends in women’s golf. Alcott repeated the feat in 1991, and after Donna Andrews emulated her following her win in 1994, it became an annual tradition for the winner and her caddie to take the plunge. Or, in the case of 1998 champion Pat Hurst, who could not swim, wading in up to her knees.
In 2023, the tournament relocated from its longtime home to the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at The Club at Carlton Woods. That did not deter Lilia Vu from continuing the tradition after she won her 1st major title, however, after she edged out Angel Yin in a playoff to become the championship’s first winner in its new home.
Vu, who also won The Women’s Open, 2 other LPGA Tour titles, and rose to No. 1 in the Women’s World Golf Rankings in a sensational 2023, will be looking to defend her title when the competition returns in April.
