The inaugural Women’s Finalissima, or to give it its full title, the UEFA–CONMEBOL Women’s Finalissima, will be held on 6 April. It is the counterpart to the men’s CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, and it is contested by the winners of the Copa America Femenina and the UEFA European Women’s Championship. In 2023, that’s Brazil and England.
Whether it’s the men’s or the women’s team, Brazil are no strangers to being crowned champions of South America. The Selecao have won 8 of the 9 available Copa America Femenina titles since the competition began in 1991, with their only blemish coming in 2006 when they lost to hosts and bitter rivals Argentina in the final. They cruised to victory in 2022 – their 4th consecutive title – without conceding a single goal and racking up 20 at the other end.
As and Three Lions or Lionesses fan can attest, major international success has typically been much harder to come by for England since the former famously lifted the FIFA World Cup in 1966. The Lionesses have been building toward it in recent years, however, with consecutive semi-final appearances in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups either side of the same finish at UEFA Euro 2017. Glory finally came on home soil in 2022, with the Lionesses defeating old rivals Germany in the final to finally bring football home.
Both teams will be preparing for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer with the hopes of lifting that trophy for the first time, and the prospect of securing some additional silverware in the meantime will be the icing on the cake. What’s more, a showdown between these 2 top sides promises to be a thrilling spectacle for the fans.
Adult tickets start from just GBP £15, while child tickets start from £7.50.
