What is the Solheim Cup?
The Solheim Cup is a biennial team golf tournament contested by Europe and the United States; it is the women’s counterpart to the Ryder Cup. It was first held in 1990 and is named after its founder, golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim.
As in the Ryder Cup, the tournament is comprised of 28 matches held across 3 days. Each match is worth 1 point to the winner, and in the event of a draw both teams gain half a point. Over the first 2 days, 16 four-balls and foursomes matches are held, while the final day is comprised of 12 singles matches.
Like other such golf events, the team format makes for a thrilling, passionate atmosphere rarely seen in individual competitions, so even casual fans can join in the fun and back Team Europe or Team USA.
What happened at the 2023 Solheim Cup?
The 2023 Solheim Cup saw history made with the competition’s first ever draw, with the score ending 14-14. Europe, as the 2-time defending champions, retained the trophy – the first time in the competition’s history they’ve denied the Americans for 3 tournaments running.
Hopes of that achievement had faded when Team USA got off to a sensational start on the Friday morning, racking up an early 4-0 lead, but by the start of the final round on Sunday the score was level at 8-8.
The Americans pulled ahead again to lead 13-11 with just 4 matches remaining, but thanks to the efforts of Maja Stark, Caroline Hedwall, and Carlota Ciganda – who shone on home soil at Finca Cortesin in Spain by winning all 4 of her matches – the 2 sides shared a dramatic tie.
When and where is the 2024 Solheim Cup?
Although the Solheim Cup is a biennial event and normally would not be held again until 2025, it is moving to an even-year schedule next year so that it may once again alternate with the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup was previously on an even-year schedule, but the 2020 edition was delayed a year due to the pandemic.
The 2024 edition will be held from 10-15 September at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia.
