The Mountaineers are the football team of Appalachian State University in Boone, South Carolina. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA and play in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference.
The Mountaineers claim 22 conference championships in their history. Until 2014, they competed in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), and when they beat the Michigan Wolverines in 2007, they became the first ever FCS team to defeat a ranked FBS team.
As of 2020, Appalachian State was the only program to have played in a bowl game every single year it was eligible to do so. Since 2019 the team has been coached by Shawn Clark, who played offensive lineman for the Mountaineers during his own college career.
