📜 All Elite Wrestling History

Spurred on by WWE’s long unchallenged dominance of the pro-wrestling industry in the United States, in 2017, a wrestling faction called The Elite – a group of wrestlers, including Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks – came together to offer fans an alternative. The group, along with other independent wrestlers, staged an event called All In, which, after selling out in just 30 minutes, became the best-attended pro-wrestling show for any company outside of WWE since 1993.

Capitalizing on this interest, The Elite, backed by businessman Tony Khan, formed All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2019. The company quickly gained a major prime-time TV deal, and attracted indie stars and former WWE wrestlers like Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, Adam Cole, Nyla Rose, and Toni Storm.

Boosted by significant financial input from the Khan family, AEW’s fresh approach to pro-wrestling helped to trigger the “Wednesday Night Wars”, in which the company’s Dynamite TV program regularly beat WWE’s NXT show in TV ratings, forcing NXT to be moved to Tuesday nights instead. The ratings victory secured AEW’s position as the number 2 pro-wrestling promotion in America, and the first genuine competitor to WWE since WCW in the 1990s.

In 2022, Tony Khan announced that AEW had purchased fellow pro-wrestling company Ring of Honor, further growing the organization’s roster and fanbase. In the same year, AEW released its first major video game and was named among Fast Company’s “Brands That Matter”, suggesting that, while the focus will always be on wrestling, the promotion’s wider impact on the entertainment world has only just begun.
